- Interview with Kiros
- http://www.kiros.com/
Barry MacKichan, lead vocals and bass.
2. Tell us about your music for anyone who doesn't know about it?
I think we are a mixture of alternative, rock, punk, and pop. We're driving and heavy, with soft spots and acoustic guitars thrown in as accents. We aim to write anthemic, multi layered, emotionally stirring compositions.
3. Share with us a brief history of the band?
Kiros started in 2000 when I met guitarist Ryan when we were 16 years old at a church youth group. We played in the garage for while, started playing local shows, and people started showing up. By 2004 we were selling out shows all over western Canada, and decided to go full time. We went international in 2005, starting with the whole Vans Warped Tour. After warped, the band almost broke up, lost a member, did nothing for almost a year. Then we reset it in 2007, and had to start all over. New line up, new CD "(A Single Strand)" and went from there. We signed to ANGR in 2011, and "Lay Your Weapons Down" is our first full length release with them. These past few years we've been touring 8-9 months a year.
4. You guys joined REDvolution tour with such great acts like "Nine Lashes" "Manafest" "Red" and "Thousand Foot Krutch" what was your reaction when you found out that you were part of it?
We were really excited! All us were TFK fans back in the day, and I remember seeing Red while on their first record and being really impressed. We first came across Manafest in 2004, so it's awesome to be sharing a stage with all these bands.
5. Tell us about your full length album "Lay Your Weapons Down"?
The whole record is a concept album, following a personal journey of internally struggling to find hope, purpose and redemption. It's split into 3 chapters (The Revolt, The Trenches, The Surrender.) The lyrics are very real, and from the heart. The past few years have seen some of my highest highs and lowest lows. This record doesn't shy away from honesty about those times and the journey through them.
6. What is your most emotional song and what was the concept behind it?
Something Beautiful. It's the final song on the record, and the finale of the story where hope is truly found. It's about beautifully surrendering a broken life to the God who can put it back together into something so much better.
8. What are your influences?
There isn't a particular band we're trying to sound like or copy. We just write songs as they come out of us. We all listen to a bunch of different bands, different genres, and put it all together to make our own thing.
9. From the venues you have played, which city have you enjoyed the most so far?
That's such a hard questions. There have been so many incredible shows lately as the band has been growing and getting bigger tours. We've been getting to play a few more arenas lately, and that is an amazing experience.
10. How did you come up with the name of the band?
It was suggested to us by a friend when we were forming the band. It's a Greek work that means "A divinely appointed moment in time." This can be translated as the moment when a miracle happens, or when God's eternal time intersects our finite linear time. Those definitions connected with us, and it's what we want every show to be a Kiros moment.
11. How do fans react to you when they see you on stage? What's your reaction as well to seeing the crowd?
We've been experiencing a great reaction, especially in our radio markets. It's so awesome to look out and see so many people singing along, even though the record has only been out for a little over a week. When the crowd is excited, it’s contagious. I also think that if we're excited, it'll infect the crowd, so we make a point of stepping onto the stage every night amped up excited to be there.
12. Since you are from Canada do you guys follow hockey and if so what's your favourite team?
I'm a die hard Calgary Flames fan. Tyler loves the Edmonton Oilers, Ryan cheers for the San Jose Sharks, and Jonny is a Dallas Stars fan.
13. How do you think the music of today has changed since you were younger?
It's definitely changed a lot. There are so many bands all fighting for attention. Depending where you look, there is so much focus on fashion/image and digital everything, and not as much on making real music. You can fake anything in the studio, and every kid and their dog has a home studio, so you never know what you're going to get live when you go see a band. Everything also seems to be very focused on singles instead of whole records. I'd buy a CD, listen to it for months and memorize it. Now if a record gets a couple rounds on your iPod, it's done pretty well. I think people used to treasure a record more. You care about something you pay $20 for, cause you're invested in it, but it's hard to care about what you rip off a torrent site. Music is becoming more of a commodity instead of a treasure.
On the plus side, there is great music in every genre, and it's just a matter of finding it. Everything is instantly accessible, and the Cd's I want to buy are always in stock on iTunes.
14. Can you touch your nose with your tongue?
Just tried, and no. The other guys are looking at me funny.
15. What's your favourite song to perform?
Our new single "Unshaken." This is our first tour performing it, and we're already seeing so many people singing along with it and connecting with it. It's a high energy song, and playing new stuff is always fun.
